Ceilidh with the Little Fox Celtic Band
Clarence House 7.30pm - 11.00pm

Nearly 100 people danced the night away to this fantastic band with a superb caller who made it all great fun. See events 2011 for info about the midsummer barn dance.

Community apple harvest

Weston Moor Nature Reserve Weston-in-Gordano

11.00 - 3.00

150 people turned up on a glorious autum day t0 pick the apple harvest and make it into apple juice. Apple presses were on hand to convert the crop into delicious juice for drinking or cider. Free to any who helped with the harvest. There was a hedgelaying demonstration by the Avon Wildlife Trust as well as guided walks around this important nature reserve. Local beekeepers explained the important role of bees as pollinators as well as selling delicious local honey. There were lots of games and activities for children and refreshments including hot apple fritters and home made cakes.

This event was organised in partnership with the Avon Wildlife Trust, Portishead in Bloom, Harbourside WI, and Portishead Lions.

Saturday 11 September

Home Energy Day

Somerset Hall 10.30 - 4.30

Around 250 people attended this event to view exhibitions of renewable energy companies, home insulation, grants, new feed-in tariff etc etc. Case studies were presented showing how to reduce energy use and reduce carbon by 80% in a variety of homes.

Seed/seedling/plant swap

Folk Hall 12.00pm-1.00pm

Another succesful community sharing event with around 60 people attending.

 

 

 

 

10/12 March

Transition workshops at High Down School

Five workshops were delivered to years 3 and 4 at Highdown Juniors on two days during the school's recent science week.The message was the need to reduce, reuse, and recycle, and to reduce the carbon footprint especially of food. One workshop focussed on CO2, and the delicate balance between plants and animals. Another tracked the journey of a kinder egg which travels over 30,000 miles to get to the supermarket.

 

21 January

Open meeting

St Joseph's Church Hall, West Hill, 7.30pm

Around 25 people attended the meeting. After the film a lively discussion ensued focussing on local food, a move away from eating meat, and the need for education and reskilling.
